We all want to excel in our jobs and advance our careers but, sadly, that means giving up on certain things like sleeping until noon, binge-drinking every night with friends, and sending out 140-character tweets into the Twittersphere at five-minute intervals. Things like these end up becoming reserved for the weekend.
But, there are some things that you should never, ever sacrifice for your job – no matter how much you, understandably, want to succeed and navigate your way to becoming a Fortune 500 CEO. You can afford to lose late lie-ins, nightly binge sessions, and constantly updating the world about Kanye West’s latest antics, but if you lose these four things, you just might lose everything.

1. Your Health
Jobs can be stressful – in fact, nearly 80% of workers feel stressed at work, according to the American Institute of Stress. And we all know how harmful stress can be not only to our jobs and the quality of our work but also to our physical and mental health.
Devoting your whole life to your job is a very bad idea as your health starts to deteriorate. Before you know it, you’re having trouble sleeping, and you’ve also put on weight from sitting all day without exercising. Putting your health on the back burner is extremely dangerous mostly because its decline isn’t immediately obvious and when you do finally recognize your mistake, it just might be too late.
2. Your Family & Relationships
Workaholism is no joke. It destroys families to the point of no return. The Charlotte Business Journal carried out a study back in 1999 and found that 55% of marriages with workaholic spouses ended in divorce compared to the 16% of dissolved marriages without a work-addicted spouse. Meanwhile, Bryan E. Robinson and Lisa Kelley conducted more groundbreaking research, in which they discovered that adult children of workaholic fathers often end up in therapy with depression, anxiety, and their own failing marriages.
Working hard no doubt helps you advance in your career and provide financially for your family by putting a roof over their heads and food on the table, but working too hard just might push them away even if you’re doing everything for them.
3. Your Principles
Chances are you have a Facebook account, and you’re familiar with the social media giant’s “on this day” feature that takes you down memory lane. You’ve also probably come across several statuses updates and posts from three, five, or nine years ago that made you cringe and feel nothing but embarrassment and disappointment in your former self.
There’ll come a day in your career when you look in the mirror and judge the person you’ve become. But the question is: will you be proud of the person you’ve become? Or did you lie, cheat, and manipulate people to get ahead? Did you honor your principles or did you sacrifice your integrity to get where you are?
4. Your Dreams
To quote from the late Robin Williams’ character John Keating in Dead Poets Society, “Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”
Our jobs play a large role in helping us get to where we want to go and accomplish all the things we want to accomplish in our professional lives, but there’s so much more to life than work. If you want to travel the world, go to Paris, London, New York, Tokyo! If you want to become a singer, apply to audition for The X Factor! Your career success shouldn’t be your only ambition in life.
